Ran w/ Alison up to Jupiter Lift, up Spiro Trail at 6:45 a.m. It's pretty grueling since it's a run to a ski lift and the downhill was on the painful side, but it's such a gorgeous trail.  It was only 9  miles (or thereabouts) but took us 2.25 hours because it was uphill.  People were starting the run as we were leaving it and I thought they were nuts since it was so hot out.

Ran the Lost Prospector Loop w/ my running partner, Alison. It's a nice, hilly trail run from my place in Park City and makes for a good run before work. The last 1.5 miles on the Rail Trail is the worst part as it is deceivingly uphill.

Road run up by Park City Mountain Resort.  The 1/4 mile is mostly uphill through Old Town, but after that, it gets flatter.

Ran at a nice, easy pace with my good friend Heather at Bear Lake.  She just had a baby, Jack, and is trying to build up her running.  Yes, Heather, Chad's wife.  This is all very incestuous.

Taking a few days off from running after Saturday's race

Helen, are you still taking time off?

Ok, so my couple of days off after the race tunred into close to 10.  I tend to burn out a bit after a race.  I need to work on that.  Although I did do plenty of yoga, biking, and lifting, so it wasn't a total loss.

Ran a loop up to Deer Valley.  It was a great run until I had to hit a port-o-potty at mile 3.  It's times like those that I'm thankful there's a lot of construction in Park City.

I attempted to do a 35 minute tempo run at 8:06 minute miles on a treadmill because I have a hard time doing speedwork outside.  That lasted for a solid ten minutes.  I spent the other 1.75 miles reading Us Weekly at 10 minute miles trying to catch my breath...so much for a tempo run, but I tried.  Maybe I'll do better next week.

Lost Prospector loop w/ Alison.  I took a spill, but rolled out of the fall like a stuntwoman and kept running.  It's such a great run, but I still hate the last 1.5 mile along the rail trail.  It's deceivingly uphill...

Wow! Fast and dexterous--that's a good combination. You know you belong on this blog if you believe that silly little things like not being upright must not stop the running.

Ran along the beach and PCH from Leucadia to Carlsbad.  It was nice to run on the beach and at sea level for a change, but it was really humid out.  8.9 minute miles average.

Ran 1 x 1600 at 7:19 minutes

Ran 1 x 800 at 7:13 minutes

Ran 1 x 400 at 7:!9 minutes

The balance was at a VERY slow pace.

Helen, your 800 and 400 times reflect your pace (as opposed to total time), right? Good job. I bet you can crack 7min in the mile.

From Helen on Wed, Sep 05, 2007 at 18:42:38

Yeah, those reflect my pace, not my time. I guess I should have been more specific. I have a lot of respect for you being able to run at the paces you do. It kicks my butt to run at these paces!

Since we've moved, Alison and I ran the reverse of our typical Lost Prospector loop.  We did it in the same time as usual (1 hour 10 minutes) but it was mostly all uphill and the first 25 minutes was ALL uphill.  Luckily the 1.5 miles home along the Rail Trail was now downhill.  I can't believe how the weather changed so quickly.  We ran in 43 degreee weather on wet trails surrounded by red and orange leaves...

Ran 8 x 400 at a pace of 7:08 (approximately 2 miles).  The balance of the running was 1/2 done at a 10 minute mile pace and the other 1/2, walking briskly.  Speed workouts kick my butt.

Ran 3 miles on the road and 5 miles on trails in Round Valley w/ Alison.  Fell twice.  Saw two moose.  My feet were killing me by the end.  I think my trail runners are too snug.  I can't seem to loosen the laces enough!

Fell twice! Sorry, hopefully you didn't get too scratched up. Are you training for St. George? What is your 5K PR?

From Helen on Wed, Sep 12, 2007 at 17:52:40

Actually, I'm a total klutz so two falls on a surfact with little more than a few rocks and leaves wasn't too bad. I'm not doing St. George, but I am planning on The Other Half in Moab. Are you training for St. George? I'm actually really slow. My 5K is about 26 minutes.

Ran along the rail trail, up to Deer Valley, and back with Alison.  As usual, we both rode our cruisers to our meeting point and by that time, we were ice cubes.  We left all of our layers on the for the run and about 10 minutes in, we were shedding most of them.  Gorgeous morning....I think it was a full moon last night.  We finished in about 55 minutes, averaging about 10 minute miles which is fine given that we couldn't feel our legs from spin class yesterday and it was a slight incline the whole way to Deer Valley.

Road run loop with Alison in Park Meadows.  It just keeps getting darker and darker out these days.  Our mornings of trail runs are long gone, which is a good thing considering I would fall and trip in broad daylight (I can't imagine what it would be like w/ a headlamp taking a leap of faith).  Once again we wore way too many layers.  The run took us 47 minutes.

Ran with Alison out and back past Old Ranch Road.  The run out there was great, but we faced a powerful and miserable headwind on the way home that made us feel like we were running in place.  It was another gorgeous day in Park City...

Road run with Alison through Park Meadows.  It was a good run, but I've decided that I've been spoiled with trail running and it's been a hard transition to road running.  It's just too dark at 6 am to run on the trails, so we've had to switch.  I find now my hip flexors and shins are hurting a lot more now that we've hit the pavement.  However, one benefit is that I'm running a lot faster on the pavement.  I think I run faster road running because I'm not worried about tripping and falling as much...

It was raining quite hard out, so Alison and I hit the indoor track at Newpark.  It was too hot in the gym and you had to run 9 times round just to hit a mile.  Those five miles were like pulling teeth.  We did it in 47 minutes and then walked an additional mile.

That is dedication to take the run indoors. 9 times around for a mile! The scenery is the main thing that keeps me going most the time. Good job.
